ANAMBRA STATE EXECUTIVE COUNCIL (ANSEC) SET TO TACKLE
UMUCHIANA, EKWULOBIA FLOOD, AND EROSION CONTROL.

— AWARDS CONTRACT TO ADDRESS PHASE 1 AND PHASE II OF FLOOD AND EROSION MENACE WITHIN THE EKWULOBIA AND OKO AXIS.

Over the years, the Ekwulobia Community and its surrounding towns have been under the burden of flood and erosion menace, and successive governments have turned a blind eye to the suffering of the people.

The only attempt to address the problem was by the late Dr Alex Ekwueme (Ide Aguata na Orumba) the then Vice President of Nigeria when the Federal Government constructed the flood control discharge channel known as “Ronasco channel”, named after the contractor.

This project lacked maintenance over the years, especially the discharge gully head due to the increased volume of water occasioned by human development efforts. The situation is so bad that part of the discharge channel within the gully erosion has broken down, leading to a massive second erosion within the gully.

The Anambra state government led by Prof Charles Soludo CFR through The Anambra State Executive Council has awarded the contract for the erosion/flood control within the Ekwulobia axis — from the gully head at Oko as phases 1 and 2.

Phase one involves the demolition of existing undersized drainage and Reconstruction of 1.191km of discharge drainage up to the gully head and Phase 2 from the gully head into the erosion and resolving the secondary erosion with the introduction of properly designed and sized discharge drainage measuring 4m×3m within the gully, the introduction of check dam among others.

The contract was awarded to two reputable firms, Tamad Construction Co Ltd and MP Infrastructure, based on their technical competence and track records at the contract sum of N1.75 billion and N2.66 billion respectively.

The project timeline for both contracts is twelve (12) months.
